Can I use a 2G rated phone on the PLUSNET mobile network?

My SIM is for my elderly mother and I am sourcing a phone for her with BIG keys so she can see them ok as her previous Nokia phone digits were just too small.

The phone I am considering suggests that its 2G only as it doesn't support internet browsing (which is fine for her)

Just making sure it will work OK for her.

@mashymashmash I would doubt that phone would work - the 2G network is all but decommissioned. You need 3G as a minimum.

@mashymashmash Have a look at the https://www.doro.com/en-gb/products/mobile-phones/ range of phones which are targeted to the older person. Have you thought of an Iphone? My mum is 86 and gets on well with an Iphone 8 even though she classes herself as a technophobe.

Re: Can I use a 2G rated phone on the PLUSNET mobile network?

Hi mashymashmash,
The 2G networks are nowhere near being decomissioned.
2G is going to be eventually phased out but only in several years time.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-59583783
https://www.techradar.com/news/2g-may-not-be-switched-off-in-the-uk-for-another-decade

Three, EE (The network that hosts Plusnet) and Vodafone have stated that 3G will be comissioned during 2023 and 2024. No doubt O2 wil make an announcement eventually.
Three do not have a 2G network, so they will be the first network to only support 4G and 5G.
So a 2G phone will work on Plusnet mobilecfor several years.

However, ASDA mobile are cheaper thann Plusnet as they have a £4 per month tarrif for unlimited calls and texts, without data.
Regards
Richard
