The limit of 100m for Cat5e has an expectation of a proper in-building installation, made up of 90m of solid core cable, a couple of sockets, and 2x 5m flexible core patch cables.
Patch cable isn't as good as the solid core stuff, so if you want to make a link using only that stuff, the accepted maximum is around 30m.
I think Cat5 has the same length limtations as Cat5e, but lower cable specs, and lower frequencies to handle.
