How to join trial...

Hello,

Complete newbie to this forum so please be gentle!
Moved into a new build property at the end of last month and it's come with FTTP.

We are still arguing with Openreach about things and waiting to get the call saying our line is ready....?

Can someone please explain the difference between FTTP and the "normal" internet I've used previously - why do only a few people offer FTTP services?
And also, once we are up and ready - how would I go about joining Plusnet on their FTTP trial?

Thanks guys!

Becky

Re: How to join trial...

ADSL and VDSL (which is FTTC) use your phone line to provide a service. Speed is dependent on distance and quality of the line from the Exchange / Cabinet.

Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) uses a fibre optic cable run direct to your house. It is not limited by distance and can achieve far higher speeds than DSL services.

To join the PlusNet trial you need to be an existing PlusNet DSL customer.

Few ISP's offer a FTTP service because there are so few lines installed.

Re: How to join trial...

Hi Brian,

Thanks for that information.
So does that mean, because I only have FTTP and am not a current Plusnet customer, I wouldn't be able to join the trial?

Re: How to join trial...

If you new house has no standard phone line installed then you are stuck with FTTP. However, if you can get a phone line then you could sign up for a PlusNet DSL service then transfer to the FTTP trial. However, I suspect this would not be particularly cheap. Apart from paying for the phone line install you would almost certainly be on a 12 month contract. At the end of this you could cancel the phone service and just have FTTP.

With FTTP I know of only 3 providers though there may be others. BT Retail obviously plus

Re: How to join trial...

So, the great Plusnet support told me to go onto the Blog and signup for their FTTP trial. I've searched high and low and see nowhere where I can either signup or register interest.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Or do I just go back to BT?

Hi @Peterday,

I'm sorry to hear someone has advised you that you sign up for the trial within the community/blogs.

The link @Strat has provided is where you can request to sign up for the trial, however I've checked your line and I'm afraid FTTP isn't currently available:

EDIT: To clarify, FTTPoD (Fibre To The Premises on Demand) is available, however this unfortunately isn't part of the trial. The availability checker would need to show WBC FTTP along the left hand side.

FTTPoD is considerably more expensive and in the past I've seen orders for this where the customer has had to pay 10's of thousands of pounds in excess construction charges, not to mention the minimum contract lengths and monthly subscription charge it also comes with.
