Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

Hmm.... I've had my IP address for so long I really don't want to lose it (:
I guess I'll justg keep using VPNs when I want to check whether or not I'm a millionaire Wink

Interesting I haven't seen that happen before but glad to hear it's been sorted.

Matt, Ive got the same issue.   Tried everything, DNS, swapping routers, even MTU which makes no difference.
Exactly the same as kdhuk in that I can access the subdomains, but not the vodafone main site.    All worked ok until I attempted to log in to my account (https) which is why at first I thought it may be MTU and been messing with that too.

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

A TCP trace over port 80 would be interesting to see? Also keen to know what gateway people are on, and if disconnecting/reconnecting makes any difference?

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

Here you go bob.    I have swapped routers this morning and had a gateway change

Their server has disabled ICMP so not responding to pings...  which is why I set off MTU tweaking just in case.

as a point - I don't know if it is relevant but why the trace go to a different site - see the difference between the tracert command and the result

Here you go bob...

Thanks. That's an ICMP trace though. A TCP trace would probably be more useful, e.g:

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

Ive just done a wireshark capture.  I dont understand wirseshark properly, but I do know that those 6 black lines are bad.
Expanding TCP Analysis I see these are suspected retransmissions - which I think means that 85.205.252.161 is not sending me an ACK (or Im not getting the ACK?)
I attach screen cap of the relevant capture if anyone knows what I should be looking at please.
Ignore MSS of 1360, that was me from MTU tweaking earlier when I took it down in steps to see if MTU tweaking made any difference.  Ive just not yet got around to setting it back to default.

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

@bob (or one of the other reps)
I note that the issue was cleared for kdhuk when he had his static IP removed.
As a test would it be possible to temporary give me another IP (put me on dynamic) to see if by any chance this does resolve the issue?
It would be interesting to see if it could be a particular block of IPs or even if it is just static IPs.
I do not want to lose my static IP permanently though.

BUMP.
Can a rep answer if it is possible please?

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

So it seems the first completely non-responsive hop is a vodafone router/server (47.73.192.146).
Could be something Vodafone doesn't like about your IP, but kdhuk had an IP in the same subnet as mine (which isn't affected), and yours is in a different subnet entirely.
The wireshark screengrab isn't overly conclusive TBH, and I think the above IP's probably the culprit anyway.

I can switch you to dynamic and re-instate a static IP later, but I can't guarantee it will be the same one.

Re: Cannot connect to specific domain

Hi bob, thanks for the reply.  I think I tend to agree that the issue is on vodafone somewhere.   I also have a nagging doubt about MTU.     Theres a massive thread about Vodafone Sure Signal and how they have difficulty connecting due to the PPPoE limitation of 1492.   It only seems to affect BT/Plusnet users on FTTC.

Re the IP - For the process of elimination it may be worth giving it a shot. ?
I have a subdomain which points to my IP, but if worst comes to worst I can ask my hosts amend the A record to a new one.

I have had the same problem over the last 6 days on a site I use, its the only site I can't access unless I tether to my phone for connection, on a fixed IP with PlusNet.
