news.plus.net (or lack thereof)

Thanks for the advance warning of the ceasing of a long-standing PN service and for announcing it so clearly and immediately to all customers in a place where everyone always looks several times every single day without fail. So much better and much more (in)visible on a forum which is generally only visited by customers when problems arise. Even better still on a board that hasn't actually seen any activity whatsoever for several years. No need for an email to a customer's inbox when something can be whispered ever-so quietly here instead and thus not really be announced in advance at all and therefore not result in any potential flack either Roll_eyes

Thank you for not sending an email to my inbox about important changes to my paid-for service with PN. I might only feel the need to resort to using usenet once every Preston Guild and all that but I do still use it if/when needs must. A right old PITA to find a sneaky announcement very quietly buried away here some months back after suddenly finding out today that it's stopped working Sad

Or am I missing something of importance here ? It was all so long ago now but I thought PN out-sourced the text-only usenet service to supernews/giganews/whatever and news.plus.net simply redirected accordingly. If so then presumably PN have decided to stop paying whoever so that's the end of that !

I also note that the subject claims to be an "UPDATE" perhaps someone could helpfully point me to the original announcement of imminent doom for which this post is allegedly an update to ?

#grumpy so didn't need another unexpected problem to solve Wink

Re: news.plus.net (or lack thereof)

We posted on these forums and on the Plusnet Feedback group on Usenet.

Under the circumstances, it wasn't felt necessary to email customers as the vast majority of our customer based weren't using or don't know what Usenet is. The two locations mentioned were really the best places to announce to those people that were using the service.

Re: news.plus.net (or lack thereof)

I've been with PN slightly longer than that.

I used to use the PN Usenet service for text groups many years ago, and it was also useful for binaries, and although the completion (which had improved towards the end before binaries were ditched) and retention weren't great, it enabled savings on using up allowances on 'third party paid for' services which would then just be needed for in-filling the missing parts.

I very rarely use Usenet these days, maybe once in a blue moon.
