Transferring Out Domain Name?

I read that PlusNet is going to end hosting and e-mail services, and as I already have another hosting service I thought I might as well transfer my domain to that now, rather than transferring it twice.

The domain page in the customer portal says to call 0800 432 0200, but all of the options seem to be related to billing and moving house, and when I've spoken to people on that number before they didn't seem to know that PlusNet did web-hosting.  I waited to see if I got transferred to someone if I didn't press a number, but it just hung up.

Is there a technical support team that I can contact, or register my request in some other way?  I have the IPS tag.

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

On a related note... I haven't heard anything from PlusNet about the transfer of services to Greenby, but once I've sucessfully moved my domain to my other hosting company I won't need their services.

Is there a way to indicate that?  Do I just delete all of the files in the webspace?  And the mailboxes?

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

The transfer to Greenby is being done in phases, by vISP brands and profile cohorts, over several months.  Comms will be sent when one's cohort is being migrated.  The easy profiles (the bulk of users) will be moved before the more complex ones.  The influencing factors are...

  • Brand
  • Total population
  • Usage profile (webmail or device email client)
  • Has a domain name
  • Has webservice content

Webservice content will be addressed after the email migration activity, which based on the FAQ will be guided by Greenby communication.

Users will not receive personalise communication from Plusnet until their cohort is ready for migration; upon migration, comms will start from Greenby.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

There is the option of changing the IPS tag directly with Nominet. It will cost you a tenner though.

Hi @virnuls - have put tags on your opening post (domain transfer, IPSTAG, IPS TAG) so hopefully one of the Help Team will see your post and contact you (by PM) to ask for your username, domain name and new IPSTAG.

If you haven't heard anything by say late Monday (16/06/25), perhaps try PM-ing one of the team - 'The Plusnet Help Team' page is here: https://community.plus.net/t5/Community-Announcements/Meet-our-Community-Team/m-p/1994887#M8512, there are five 'help team' members listed.  Afaik if you send a PM to any one of them, the rest all get to see it, depends who's on shift at any given time, and then one of them puts in the request for the IPSTAG change.

Getting the change made usually takes about five days, I think (sometimes less).  Not sure who does it (NetOps maybe?) but usually it's all pretty straightforward - and if you're already planning to move the domain to another hosting service, likely to be a lot less hassle for you if you get that done now rather than waiting for it to be moved to greenby and then having to go through the whole process again subsequently.

I'm guessing that others here will be exploring similar options, so please do update this thread with how things progress, if you get time somewhere.

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

Thanks @rflitcroft  - I didn't realise that that was an option!

It's a "free" domain that PlusNet offered back in 2002, and they're still listed as the registrar, so I'm wonder whether Nominet would actually do it for me?

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

Thanks @Penny - I'll keep an eye out for message.

I'm not in a hurry, but thought that if the domain is moving anyway I might as well do it myself!

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

My domain is now up-and-running in its new home - thanks!

Before I'd got the notification on the "ticket" I noticed that the domains section had disappeared from my account in the customer portal - I tried to transfer it in to my new registrar and it worked.

It's interesting that whenever you create a new domain (or move one to a new host) you're already told that it might take up to 24 hours to propagate, but I've never found that it takes more than a few minutes.

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

For anyone else planning this change...

I've always wondered way, when you register a domain, you're told that DNS changes might take 24 hours to propagate and yet the website usually appears in a matter of minutes.

Well, when I moved my domain away from Plusnet, the website did appear from its new home almost instantly, but I didn't start to get e-mails until the following day - obviously MX records take longer to propagate than A and AAAA.

Mail stopped being delivered to Plusnet in the evening, and didn't appear in my new mailbox until about 2pm the next day - however the messages from the intervening period did later turn up.

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

It all depends on the various TTLs - they are different for Name Servers, Websites and MX records.

With the right preemptive measures it can be shortened.

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

HI,

I would like to do the same thing and transfer my domain out from plusnet.

If you could get someone to contact me, I can then pass on all the relevant details.

Many thanks

Re: Transferring Out Domain Name?

@pride Thank you for taking the time to contact us on our Community Forum, I hope you are well.

I tried calling the number on the account unfortunately it seems the contact details are not up to date.

At your earliest convenience, please can you DM me your account username and a contact number so that we can organise this for you, we will also need the IPS tag from the incoming domain provider (I have sent you a PM to trigger the response from you.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
