Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

We have no mobile signal no fibre in our area and our copper wire broadband is useless, certainly not reliable enough for reliable VOIP. What happens when the our PSTN is removed ?

@kittyhawk

To help advise can you post a screen image of the results from the following. Include the narrative but hide your details.

Re: Switch to Fiber and keep (for now) PSTN line

VOIP only needs 100k each way, and I had been running it on a 2.5Mb ADSL line.  The upload would have been around 300k for the usual 8:1 ratio.  Yours should be 3x better

OK as long as nothing else was trying to operate.

As has been said, the bandwidth requirements for VoIP are minimal. If in the future you can only get ADSL then you will need to move ISP to one that can supply SoADSL. If you were to move to BT, for example, they offer this and Digital Voice. When using this service the BT hub automatically prioritises voice traffic.

What will cause you problems is using a hub that doesn’t include prioritisation facilities, such as the freebies often issued by ISPs that don’t offer a voice service.

The problem is , our internet is completely unreliable and keeps dropping. So no mobile signal, no Reliable;e internet . No Fibre , or plans for fibre . We are kinda screwed. This cannot be legal surely . Awhile community with no reliable method of calling emergency services .

Before FTTP turned up, I tried the USO approach.  They simply told me to buy a 4G mobile dongle and put it up a nearby tree to get a signal.

That was on 2.5Mb down ADSL - although reliable

The "observed speeds" are made up in someones head . There is virtually no upload speed. ( I have the best wifi kit , so not my issue and lousy even when plugged into router ) The internet keeps going down and is unable for a half hour at a time .

@kittyhawk

Thanks for the information.

Not a good picture. The likes of Starlink may be your best bet in the near future. Openreach may in time get around to doing Full Fibre in your area but who knows.
