Re: Openreach ONT box power lead

@Baldrick1

My apologies - I missed "reconsider"

I see no problem if the ONT is in the pantry. Using a face plate with a brush (as previously shown) would create a gap for the cable to reach the hallway. Then either up the side of the shelf or drill an access hole in the shelf itself.

Re: Openreach ONT box power lead

Hi all.

Got to be quick due to work.

It really can't go in pantry and roof of pantry is very very flaky / crumbling. Another job to fix Sad

(Plus there is some kind of trunking and old switch style socket on the left hand side of the wall).

This was the old ancient electric set-up in the pantry:

And this is after ENW put new connection into house and  the grey "box" in the Spring, plus also a new EON fitted meter after ENW had done.

As you can see the fuseboard / consumer unit is ancient and the electrician said he wouldn't bother putting a new one in "as it would be too sensitive and keep tripping".

Apologies the photo below is still with the old meter but shows the same fusebox we have.

@andyt1970

I was thinking about the wall to the left of the door.

I'm surprised that the electrician didn't stick a 'condemned' label on the installation.

Whilst the BS 7671 regs are not required to be retrospectively met, false tripping suggests failing insulation and time for a complete house rewire.

If the house was to come on the market or be formally let I would question whether it would qualify for the nesessary  electrical safety certificate.

Re: Openreach ONT box power lead

What installation? The new electricity supply entry point done by Electricity North West ( ENW)  and meter installed afterwards by E-On? Don't tell me that's bad Sad

The electrician we used before to put security lights up and convert some single sockets to doubles hasn't seen this, nor has he got back to us so extension leads it is then in the box room. Still expect Plusnet and / or Openreach to say they can't come next Thursday now. That's 2 days I have booked off work......

No, not at all.

I was referring to the comment that replacing the ancient fuse box with a modern consumer unit would cause false tripping.

If you are not aware, modern consumer units incorporate devices that trip if there is any leakage current. This is a safety feature designed to protect people who get an electric shock by switching off the power quickly if leakage current exceeds a dangerous level.

If there is already this level of leakage due to wiring of a similar age as the fuse box having deteriorating insulation, then it’s potentially dangerous.
