DDNS update frequency with dynamic IP

I'm in a similar situation to the post raised by Stonehouse (ie currently on FTTC with fixed IP but upgrading to FTTP). However because of some weird conflict with the Plusnet v Openreach address databases I'm having  to cancel my current account and sign up for a new one, so I assumed I'll lose fixed IP as it's no longer offered. This isn't really a problem as I can resolve my WAN name to "today's" IP using my hosting site's DDNS feature in cPanel.

My question is - how often is my public IP address likely to change? I'd like to call the DDNS refresh at roughly the same interval. Does once a day sound reasonable?

Re: DDNS update frequency with dynamic IP

If you get a free hostname with no-ip.com, they have a bit of software you can run that uploads any dns change no more than 5 minutes after it happens.

Re: DDNS update frequency with dynamic IP

Yes I've used no-ip in the past but I think the free account needs manually confirming once a month.

Hardly a big deal, but my host's free DDNS lets me use my own domain name.

Once my FTTP is live I can log how often the address changes. I assume it's no more frequent than the DNS lease period - is that known?

Fix

@Stoker

My understanding is that it will not change unless the connection is dropped. Even then your IP address is drawn from a small local pool, so you might well pick up the same one again.

I have never been re- issued with the same ip address when the connection has dropped, router re- booted with Plusnet, must just be unlucky. Sky was very sticky and I had the same one for 18 months,
