Hi!
Since before Xmas I keep having intermittent problems receiving mail on my Mac (desktop and laptop). Am asked for password, but when I enter it, am often told "Unable to verify user name or password".
I can get into webmail OK, and sometimes it works on mail client.
Neither my user name nor password has changed.

Are you using Plusnet Safeguarding?
In another browser tab, login into the Plusnet user portal BEFORE clicking the fault & ticket links

Ah, that answer points a different direction ... is Plsunet still your ISP?
Is this a receiving issue, not a sending issue - that is does the password failure message state "IMAP" server (as opposed to "SMTP" server)?

I use free-online, but ISP is provided by house (communal WiFi).
The failure isn't every time. Sometimes I enter password and it accepts and I can get the mail.
It just says "Unable to verify account name or password".
I can send OK.

When you encounter this problem, are other internet connectivity activities OK? This sounds more like an intermittent internet connectivity issue than an email issue.
Most email applications will report a password error for ANY issue which prevents connection to the email service.
