World of Warcraft lag spike issue

Hi there,

I've recently switched from Sky to Plusnet. Most of the time I have no issues with the broadband. Speed and latency are good.

However occasionally when playing WoW (World of Warcraft), the network connection appears to stop. All other network traffic seems unaffected; web traffic is fine. Sometimes if I leave it for a few minutes, it seems that the blocked packets do eventually get through and I see the game play out in accelerated time. It always occurs when switching between instances (i.e different servers that the game client connects to). Reloading the game client fixes the issue until the next occurrence.

It happens perhaps once or twice over 3-4 hours in the evenings. One of the suggested troubleshooting methods is to use pathping (https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/7871) to debug. However the output always terminates at the router and I don't receive packet information further than that:

1 3ms 0/ 100 = 0% 0/ 100 = 0% dsldevice.lan [192.168.1.254]

Trace complete.

---

I read that it might be due to the router firewall, so I tried to disable it. However when I go to do that, the router crashes/reboots and the firewall stays on. I've tried numerous times doing factory reset but this hasn't helped...

Everything on my equipment should be known good: The PC is connected by ethernet and there should be no issues with the phoneline, since I didn't have these issues on Sky Broadband with the exact same setup only a few weeks ago.

I've seen other WoW players have had issues with Plusnet but seemingly not the same exact issue I'm seeing.

Is there anything anybody can suggest to help debug?

Thanks!

Gareth

Re: World of Warcraft lag spike issue

Hi Gareth.

I'm sorry that you're experiencing latency issues while playing WoW.

Our tests aren't showing a definitive cause for the problem, but I've noticed your line is producing more errors than I'd like to see at least over the last 24 hours.

To try to combat the errors, I've increased the signal to noise ratio(SNR) from 3dB to 6dB. Could you let us know how things go next time you're gaming?

Thanks,

Anoush

P.S. Lok'tar ogar!
