Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

The Channel 5 (sorry five) Gadget Show is performing a broadband speed survey.
http://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/speed_test.htm
They ask for an address and email address. I gave them just my county and a disposable email address.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Yeah I saw this last night, unfortunately the speedtester on their site appears to be getting hammered and reports speeds much slower than similar testers.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

I completed test - gave them postcode, with name as Nadger, and fsmail addy.
I did add comment that, having had BB since March 2002, I knew what to expect from "up to 8Mb".
Edit - I did feel that their speedtest was fair, Chris.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Just how is it possible to be deluded about "up to 8Mbps"?
one bit per hour meets the advertised speed.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Here is an example of the difference between the speeds:-
five.tv/thegadgetshow
Download Speed: 2706 kbps (338.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 287 kbps (35.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

mybroadbandspeed.co.uk
Download Speed: 6633 kbps (829kB/s)
Upload Speed: 350 kbps (43.8kB/s)
These tests were taken with 2 minutes of each other and you can see the difference between them
*Edit*
Added a second test from five.tv/thegadgetshow as an image

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

The speed tester on the gadget Show is the same as the one used by PN.  Both are by Okla and have very similar interfaces.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Yeah, but if the servers and network isn't upto the load, the results will be slower on that test.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Test I completed was in line with what I get elsewhere 2850/380 but just ran a few more tests which were slower.
Being borderline I get a few days with profile of 3000kbps followed by a few at 3500kbps.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

treid to time them close but kids put me off.
I've done 2 today on our speedtester - both came in at over 6500kbps - so i don't trust any other tester
if they are doing a hunt to get the truth about speed atleast have a server that can cut the mustard!

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

Admittedly the G.S. tester reported very low speeds immediately after the show. However, generally it has reported about 6Mbps and BT estimates that given my distance from the exchange the best that I could possibly achieve is 6.5 Mbps.
The PN speed tester tells me that I am achieving  29.56 Mbps but perhaps that is because I refuse to disable my Norton firewall to perform a speed test.

Re: Speed Survey By The Gadget Show

The whole site was giving service unavailable around 9pm last night, about an hour or so later the speedtest started working but giving sub-1Mbps speeds when our speedtest was showing 6.5Mbps. Seems a bit better now but still lower (5Mbps compared to 7Mbps). Be interesting to know how many people were/have been trying it and compare that with other speedtests.
