If you put your number in the BT Wholesale checker it'll tell you exactly what you can get and what the estimated speeds are. Mind you those speeds get updated based on real speeds, so if you've been getting a slow speed because of a poor line, the estimated speeds will be lower.

It's only when the line starts crackling that I recall what dial-up used to be like

I've kept the recording for the BT engineer.

BTW broadband engineer has called, there was no interference whilst he was here. He managed to get the IP profile and SNR reset manually and it's now running better.
Download speed achieved during the test was - 3.83 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.6 Mbps-7.15 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5.66 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 5.5 Mbps
I'll keep recording RS charts and see if things hold up. I suspect it will be fine until the line crackles again.

What did he say when you play the recorded line noise? Not even bothering to check/remake any joints, or swap pairs etc is just wasting everybody's time (and money - we end up paying for it in our line rental!).
The next time the noise crops up, I would close the Broadband fault and start a Phone fault and complain that when the noise is on the line you can't have a proper conversation.
PS. I don't know what happened to attaching zips to tickets, we'll have to find out.

Did he actually plug any form of tester in and carry out any tests, or did he just pick up the phone?

The internet is still holding on at around 5M sync, still managing to hold an IP profile of 4.0 (actual download speeds of 400Kbytes/s). The line is noisy sometimes (but most calls I made yesterday were perfectly clear) and the modem has resynced several times.
Just now was very loud noise, the modem has resynced several times this morning but still holding.
I'll just keep requesting BT visits and hope the line is noisy when they turn up.

With that low speedtest result, it may be that you had a brief very low sync with a very low proifle, which has since risen, but that might have given a very low Current Line speed.
I see no-one has commented about no longer being able to attach a zip to a tciket.

IP profile now 4.0, but internet still useful. The line was very noisy for two hours this morning but is perfect at the moment.
