Just did the 'MTU Tweak' and now I is a flying !

I was a bit disappointed that my sppeds had dropped from my normal 4-4.5 Mbps to around 3. So I performed the MTU tweaks using DrTCP and now am flying at 5- 5.5..  Smiley

My own experience of tweaking MTU/RWIN is pretty much what's contained in this help page:
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/troubleshooting/rwin_guide.shtml
The suggested calculations may vary but worth a try.

Re: Just did the 'MTU Tweak' and now I is a flying !

Could any kind soul advise me - is it possible to tweak a Mac system running OS X Panther using a like program to Dr TCP?
So far I have been unable to find the answer to this question.

Davidhil.

Re: Just did the 'MTU Tweak' and now I is a flying !

I have just used: TCPOptimizer.exe from SpeedGuide.net - Your Guide to Broadband
I now have a hot rodded chrome plated Solwise 715 running on Nitro!!!!
Thats 4358kbps over 801.b wireless on a not very fast portable, to a Cable modem Wireless router plugged into my Solwise 715 ADSL router at the end of 1991 internal house wiring.
This is over 3 pair BT Telephony internal Extension wiring, and the ADSL router about 20 metres away from the master socket! The BT Telephony internal wiring is twisted pair, a bit like cat 5 cable.
Here are some recent speed tests:
Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 20:42 4358 kbps (545kB/s) 291 kbps (36.4kB/s)
Today 20:29 3707 kbps (463kB/s) 369 kbps (46.1kB/s)

SpeedGuide.net - Your Guide to Broadband
" Some of the best Broadband tweaks and Speed patches on the Net "
The site focuses on system performance, with areas including Broadband Internet connections, Windows, Overclocking, all targeted towards a technically aware audience. A large section of SpeedGuide.net is dedicated to Cable Modems and DSL technology, stressing on improving TCP/IP performance over high speed/latency networks.
With the Bell wire disconnected at the socket, my Solwise 715 has been solidly synching up at:
--> adsl show rate
Data Path : Interleaved
  Downstream Bit Rate : 6752 Kbps
  Upstream   Bit Rate : 448 Kbps
More info at: http://www.dougrice.plus.com/Erlangs/adsl.htm
This is a bit better than the 60 K download speeds I was getting last summer!
Very many thanks to all you forum contributers, and support staff.

Re: Just did the 'MTU Tweak' and now I is a flying !

@Davidhil
Looks like you can just tweak MTU on Tiger and above:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303192
But there is some info on this post about adjusting RWIN which should help speeds, looks a bit fiddly tho!

Re: Just did the 'MTU Tweak' and now I is a flying !

If you play any online games I would advise to check they have not been affected.  After using DrTCP as per instructions I noticed a definite improvement but when I came to play battlefield 2 I could only find about 3 servers and sometimes none at all  Shocked  After undoing the changes made by DrTCP I went back to finding over 800+ servers  Grin  so I left well alone.
