Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

MrG,
The attenuation implies 4.6km.
The previously reported synch speed (2240) is way above expectations for this line.  As Brian has said, it will take a few days for the profile to change on ADSL1 (G.Dmt).  Until that changes, running speed tests is somewhat futile.  The profile will only change after the line has been stable (no disconnections) for 5 or more days.
I recommend that you leave the billion in place and do not "mess" with it for a week, keeping a watch on the SYNCH speed.  When PN receives a bRAS update from BTw they will change your profile (reported as current speed in the portal) and drop the PPP session.  After this you should see an improvement in DATA speed.
So long as you have a good synch speed, time is all that is required to achieve an improvement in DATA speed.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

The 63.5 and 31.5 attenuation figures are the maximum values that can be encoded in the ADSL1 handshaking messages. So they are the maximum values many devices will display when operating on ADSL1. The actual attenuation could be higher.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Thanks Townman
Interestingly, I've just run a BT Speedtest again.  This now reports that my IP Profile is 1.5Mbps, rather than the 0.75Mbps reported in my earlier post.
However the DS is still 0.7Mbps.
Download speed achieved during the test was - 0.7 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1.95 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.5 Mbps
I shall leave the Billion in place and see what happens over the next 5 days.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Try dropping the PPP session, but avoid resynching the router.
If you poke around the router pages, you should find a disconnect button, which when clicked will change to connect.  This drops and re-establishes the PPP session to PlusNet, but does not drop synch.  This might improve the DATA speed.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Wow!
Found the appropriate page on the router and did a disconnect and reconnect.
DS now 1.47Mbps!
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.47 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1.95 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.5 Mbps
Thank you very much indeed Townman

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

That's good news - the PPP session has now picked up the revised profile.  The revision of the profile is supposed to drop the PPP session, but sometimes the process fails.  Shocked

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

The IP Profile is still at 1.5Mbps, whereas when I was with Virgin it was 2Mbps (and a DS of 1.8Mbps).
Will the IP Profile go back up to this in time?
Current DS is still 1.47Mbps.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

The IP profile is set according to the speed your modem connects at. The speed your modem connects at is unlikely to increase in time, although it will vary slightly each time it re-connects depending on the conditions at the time.
What was your upload speed on Virgin? I am wondering if you were previously on a fixed rate 2Mb connection, which have 0.25Mb upload bandwidth. Although considering the line length, it's too long for a 2Mb fixed rate connection anyway.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Hi ejs
With Virgin, my upload speed was about what I have at present, 0.38Mbps.
It wasn't a 'fixed rate connection as, as you say, the line length is too long for that.
However, it consistently stayed at 1.6-1.8Mbps download for a number of years, with the line IP profile at 2Mbps.
Obviously the current 1.47Mbps is a lot better than the 0.7Mbps that I was getting initially with PN.
It would be nice to get back to the Virgin speeds, as 'every little helps'!
I've still got the Billion router in, as it seems to cope better with the long line length than the PN supplied Sagem one.
Are there better routers out there that could improve my DS speed?

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

I've done a quick line test for you. The SNR target is currently 9db. It might be worth lowering this to 6db, but you need to be sure you've got a stable connection first.

Thanks Tony
It certainly seem pretty stable at the moment, but how long do you suggest that I leave it for before lowering the SNR?

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

I'd like to see a few days, if not a week.

I can't tell if the above are intentional or not.

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Hi Tony
OK, I'll leave it running, except that I've just had to reset it!
The breaks on your graph seem to coincide with when I've been messing around with the router.
I'll leave it alone for a few days!

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Hi Tony
I've just done a BT speedtest and noticed the the IP Profile has gone up to 1.75Mbps.
Also the DS has gone up to 1.67Mbps.
Is this due to something that you have done, or is it just all settling down automatically?
Download speed achieved during the test was - 1.67 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 0.4 Mbps-2 Mbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :2.18 Mbps(DOWN-STREAM), 0.45 Mbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1.75 Mbps

Re: Just Joined from Virgin but slow speeds

Following on from several recommendations on this forum, I've just installed a new Billion Bipac 7800N router.
Sadly my IP Profile has dropped back to 0,5Mbps!
I know that the line can support an IP Profile of 1.75Mbps (see my previous post), so do I have to wait for this to happen automatically over the next few days, or can Plusnet change this manually?
