Broadband all of a sudden stopped working at midnight. Router showing solid orange light. Reset router a couple of times but not working. I don't have phone set to test the dial tone.

You need to buy a handset; cheap as chips these days.

Seems to have fixed itself overnight. I should get a phone set , its just me being lazy. Thanks

Possibly some kind of maintenance work.  There used to be a list of such work easily available, and maybe there still is.  My connection went down at 1 am. one night, and when I checked, there was maintenance scheduled for this part of town.  As in your case, all was back to normal the next morning
