BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

Just seen this on the AAISP blog:

[info] BT congestion update
We have the following briefing from BT :-
"We believe that some areas of the BT 21CN WMBC platform have shown some signs of congestion over the last few weeks. This has come to light due to the detailed monitoring carried out by AAISP using FireBrick FB6000 LNSs as well as monitoring of other ISP links by thinkbroadband.
Working in partnership with BT to resolve this issue has helped prioritise planned network upgrades to ensure a ongoing quality of service. The planned upgrades increase the potential capacity of relevant links tenfold.
The cause of these issues appears to be unexpectedly fast take up of the new BT 21CN broadband services.
The first upgrades are being planned to commence w/c 11th January at London Watling Street metro node followed by a second upgrade scheduled for 19th January at the Birmingham BRAS's. BT will be working through the remaining nodes to increase capacity over the coming months so as to avoid further congestion issues.

How many nodes have to be mended?

It was "The planned upgrades increase the potential capacity of relevant links tenfold" that caught my eye.
Doesn't that point to a colossal miscalculation during planning of the network?

Re: BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

It's likely they're simply switching GbE endpoints with 10GbE endpoints somewhere in the network.  10GbE equipment is ludicrously expensive so it makes sense for them to have deployed on standard GbE in the first instance.

Re: BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

First install using commodity hardware.
As demand increases (and more pockets get lined) upgrade the hardware to expensive, bleeding edge stuff. Wink
Meanwhile, forget to monitor the links to see when they're hitting capacity Wink

GbE endpoints with 10GbE

means replace 1Gigabit/s ethernet with 10Gigabit/s ethernet (for some reason ethernet speeds go up by a factor of 10).
10Mb, 100Mb, 1Gb, 10Gb etc

Re: BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

PlusNet should take some of the blame for "overcapacity"......  Embarrassed  . due to trying to shift so many customers over to 21CN before BT can cope with us all  Cheesy

Re: BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

Plusnet reduce costs by shovelling everyone onto 21CN as fast as possible.
Same for most ISP's.

... and for a long time ignore the ISPs who are complaining about speeds. Sad

Re: BT admit there is congestion on the 21CN network

How come BT only acknowledged a problem after weeks (months?) of complaining from AAISP. Did they have their heads in the sand after "banging in" their 21cn infrastructure!?
Ludicrous! Shocked
