haha
just went back to firmware version 260 on the ac66u and now my pings are better than they have ever been.
the new firmware had it at 13ms with 3 or 4 jitter.
260 gets 7ms with 1 jitter.
asus have gradually made each version worse.

I have gone from the beta version to merlins 26b even though I was getting higher speeds with the beta, I would have trouble trying to swap between 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz

Do any of you clear the nvram when doing fw upgrades? I've read it's quite important when there are a lot of feature/driver changes between fw versions.

I tried this and got to the point of entering a security password for WPA, then it all went wrong! It lost connection, I couldn't log onto the router at all. I couldn't connect to the Internet. Gave up and put the tg582 back. I tried resetting and off and on etc.
I'm using a mac and I'm setting it up wirelessly. Is there an idiots guide on how to set the router up?

how do you do this via telnet?
when the beta version was launched this page came up with that option.
now i cant get that page back when i try and reload the beta firmware..
on another forum someone mentioned doing it by telnet but thats a bit heavy duty for me.

Best use ethernet wire, rather than wireless, to set up the Asus router before plugging it to the modem.
* Reset the router to factory defaults. Press the reset button that is located where ethernet ports are. Keep it pressed until power led blinks, the let go.
* Router has now 192.168.1.254 IP address. Make sure your mac is not connected to any wireless. In mac go to system preferences-> Network->Ethernet(on the left)->where it says configure IPV4:-> select using DHCP
* Connect one of the LAN (Not Wan) ports on Asus to your mac by an ethernet cable.
* Open your browser, type 192.168.1.254, when login page from Asus shows, user: admin, password: admin
* From memory the first page asks you to change your password, just change it, and press next
* Asus then scans to find a wan connection, when it fails it then asks to retry or Manual set up, choose Manual setup.
* Next page select PPPoE, put in your Plusnet userid eg xxxx@plusdls.net, and password, click next
* set up your wireless SSID and passcode for both 2.4ghz and 5ghz, click next
* I think the router now comes up with the main Page showing all the menu selections on the left.
Now logout from the Asus router, set your mac to however it was before.
Connect your Asus WAN port to the BT Modem.

It's fairly simple actually and similar to using the command prompt in Windows.
First you need to enable telnet on the router - Administration > System > Enable Telnet
Then download a program like Putty.
Telnet to the router IP.
Enter admin username/password
Then type the following commands:

did it today before i loaded the beta back then again after loading the beta on and now im getting the same speeds as i was on 260 firmware.
havent tested wireless yet but wired now is at its optimal

got a ping monitor which just happens to work only when im on the ps3

the layers sections is the beta firmware and in the middle is the  firmware
why the difference???
gotta admit though gaming is very similar

It sounds like you did the equivalent of sawing off the branch you're sitting on! 
As TBag says, it's much safer to use an ethernet cable for the set up process. Have you got it working now with his instructions?

You must have set the PS3 as your DMZ - hence all incoming internet traffic (pings etc.) are directed to your PS3. Much better not to use DMZ from a security point of view. UPnP should work fine for it.

yes ps3 is on static ip and dmz
thats not a problem
