wifi/wired speed disparity

I connected my linux pc to my router by a patch cable and got 6.8mb consistently. When I connect my xp pc by usb wifi to my voyager 2110 I get no more than 2 and usually a lot less.
Going to the routers IP, the settings indicate my download speed as 8.128mb. Do I need to reconfigure my router somehow as this disparity seems way too great to be natural fluctuations in speed? I did the quick set up when I first installed the router. The usb adaptor is a generic one, perhaps net-lynx or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
