printer and file sharing advice required.

I have just setup my network to allow file and printer sharing between my two wireless pc.

In doing so XP advised that this would make my files visable to people online. I am behind a router firewall and avg. Does this mean that if you are redaing this you can see my documments and files.

many thanks

As long as you dont have any ports open to any of the pc's you are 99% safe(nothing is ever 100%).

where should I check to see that I have no open ports.
Do there not need to be any open ports to allow the router etc to work?

You can check ports using Shileds Up web site.

If you are behind a router all ports should be invisible to the outside world unless you have specifically opened any. I think most routers will have a default of allowing all outgoing traffic and blocking all incoming and have no open ports.

PCs on the same side of the router should be able to "see" each other and share files if you enable sharing on the relevant directories.

I'd forgotten shields up. I've tested and all is well on both machines.

Many thanks.
