Wifi Speeds

Hoping someone can answer this.

I have a linksys wag54gs router and a lappy with built in wireless (AMD 64 mobile Athlon). If I run the speedtests wirelessly from here I get the following results.

03-03-2007 12:10:26 2240.5
03-03-2007 12:08:18 2156.7
03-03-2007 11:48:08 2006.1
This is with the lappy sat next to the router with a excellent 54.0Mbps conection

If I plug the lan cable in and connect that way I get the following results

03-03-2007 12:09:54 4915.2
03-03-2007 12:09:42 4222.5
03-03-2007 12:09:16 5090.7

Should I be seeing these speed drops from a solid 54Mbps "excellent" connection ? And is there anything I could do to improve it.
BTW router firmware is up to date and updated the lappys wifi via windows update last week

Thanks

Wifi Speeds

I wouldn't expect more than 14Mbs on a perfect connection over a 56Mbs wifi link. However that said 14Mbs is plenty more than the 2Mbs you're seeing.

The only thing I can suggest is that the router doesn't have enough processing power to do ADSL+ and wifi. I've notices something similar with my own router (though not with wifi); if I brows the admin pages on my router at the same time as downloading I will find that the download is much slower while the router's pages are also being served.

I know that doesn't help much other than to suggest that if I'm right there is nothing much you can do. Does it make any different if WEP is enabled or disabled?

Have solved the problem .. downloaded TCPOptimizer and let it set the MTU etc, wifi speed has now doubled ....
