End of Day: 1st July

Hello again! The sunshine continues unabated here in Sheffield - it's so warm that I may need to wear shorts tomorrow. I am so not used to seeing sunshine that I don't really know what to do, apart from buy copious amounts of ice cream and dig out my flip flops! However, due to my penchant for spilling cups of tea down myself, I won't be wearing flip flops to work.* Enough jibber jabber and on with the EOD! First up it's a distinctly continental welcome from Henry in Development. Things have changed since the last time I wrote the Community EOD: - Another month has passed - Summer started (In Sheffield anyway - the sun has come out to play) - We have 2 QBurst guys on our pod (see below) - And Rys (you remember him? He's my mentor) has now ruined his iPhone There have been other snippets here and there, but I forget as the days mingle into one. Time flies and all that... So, onto the QBurst guys, we welcome back Arun who has been here before helping us out on big projects. But we also say a big huge hello to Hijas who is over here for the first time, and is currently setting up his alpha environment so he can work his magic. Setting up your alpha environment is a joy that every developer goes through when they first start in the department, and then there are some (no names) that like to do it just for fun. I am currently sitting next to such a person, and it worries me - it really does. So, on the sunniest of days we have seen so far this year, I bid you a fond farewell! Thanks Ben. Over to Catherine in QA now: Hello again from QA! We're well into the swing of our own project work now - I'm on a Java and JBoss upgrade and Matt 2 is sharing the love with problems testing, working closely with our developers in Poland. Nigel is doing some account verification work with Paul, Gavin is doing automation work and Matt 1 and Gary are both on holiday. Alright for some, eh? We're also very lucky to be helped by Rugmini and Babitha, who have come over from QBurst to help us with testing, so thanks to them! Latest news on the iPhone: Rys spilled a glass of Sauvignon Blanc over it, and now it only works when vigorously hairdryed for a while. But will he get another? [Ed: These EODs have more cliff-hangers than Neighbours!] Up next is Kev in Networks... Today in Networks I have been looking after the JTN and PAYH support desk, whilst getting Dan familiar with the services. The team has also been looking after any tickets that have been passed up to ourselves that require further investigation including the traffic management tickets. Other things that have been happening around the department include updating of our documentation, wrapping up some project work, Ellacoya updates, monitoring, upgrades, looking after problems that have been raised, conducting vulnerability assessments and infrastructure security audits. Thanks Kev! Now it's Chris in Comms: Well it's that time of the afternoon to go round and see what we've been doing today. Hmm nobody appears to be at the desk apart from me, and I'm not interesting enough to keep this EOD going on my own. Come back tomorrow for a more fun-filled and action packed EOD from commsland. Thanks for reading. Oh. That was short and sweet! Now over to James in Web Development: Mark - the email tool and Brightview phase 2 problems Nick - MAAF support improvements and partner programme work The GMan(Grzegorz) - design work on the PlusNet website Jonny - building a prototype for the change password tool for MyAccount Pete - has a meeting with Kelly, got involved with some internal planning and welcomed our new Head of Marketing, Shailini Ghelani to the company, on her first official day here at PlusNet Towers Andrew - working on various NADs Sam - constructing technical diagrams and working on MyAccount design Rupert - MyAccount development and a code review for James Colin - writing JavaScript for Jonny, writing PHP for the Community Site and wrote a technical specification I've been getting my PlusNetter of The Month application through the various reviews and tests and it's almost been approved for use on the live platform. Thanks James. Finally it's Adheel in the CSC: Top 5 Summary of the day, a mixture of calls in length and variety, similar to the climate! 1) Router set-ups. Seem to be a lot of D-Links not able to login after resetting admin details (as prompted) and also locking up and asking for a firmware upgrade. Usually a factory reset resolves these two issues. 2) Username/password confirmations. Still people with missing realm for example the "@pludsl.net". 3) Email set-up. Customers using wrong addresses and calling us rather than checking set-up guides and or adding extra mailboxes. 4) Fault updates. Customers still complaining they are not getting fault updates in a timely manner. 5) Customers also calling in with new speed enquiries, some asking if their line can take more in any way, some reporting it as it has fallen in performance usually due to an unknown intermittent connections. Thanks everyone and have a good evening folks - and if it's sunny where you are, make the most of it Smiley Ali McGowan *Now that I am coming to post this and am doing so remotely, it's now lashing it down with rain. British summertime eh... Boo!!!
