wireless networking, bb connecion to router and ad-hoc networking

I currently have all my pcs connected to each other via the router.
What is an ad-hoc network does connect pc to pc and miss out the router and could I use one alongside my current connections to connect my pcs to eachother directly rather than via the router?

Re: wireless networking, bb connecion to router and ad-hoc networking

You are correct you can connect to another pc via the ad hoc method but depending on the device you may only be able to connect to another pc or the Internet not both as you would have to swap connections. There is no advantage unless you intend to regularly transfer large amounts of data between two pc's  even then as they are on the same channel as the router(unless you change it) they may flood the airwaves and stop other pc's connecting to the Internet
