winmail.dat and Outlook Express

An organisation sends me regular emails, with a pdf attachment.  In my email program, Outlook Express, the attachment becomes part of the message. Viewing the message source shows it is there under the name winmail.dat.  but is unreadable random characters.  The sender has looked into this and accepts that it is a problem with some recipients. Attachments sent as simple text files are received OK.
Is there anything I can do?

tell the sender that a pdf file has a .pdf extension and that a .dat file can be anything, they should get their house in order

Its once again M$S using its own non industry standards - here is their cure http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138053
