here is a weird one ..... windows update i have it set to manual so i can decide which updates i download , i normally check on a Tuesday most updates are released on Tuesdays ;).
Now this morning i turn my PC on ????? takes ages to start then it comes up with Updating windows do not turn off
How when no auto update ,, and nothing shows in update history ????

Had you done Windows Update Cleanup in Disk Cleanup? Last time I did that recently, to free up over 1GB of disk space on a Windows 7 computer (with a small SSD), a handful of different updates which were already installed re-appeared in Windows Update, which it had to download and install again.
Even if Windows Update Cleanup doesn't break detection of already installed updates, it will show "configuring updates..." on the next boot.
