windows error 711 can't connect to network

I am using a wireless dongle to connect to the internet. It has worked fine for a number of months. I then started to give me error 711 can't connect to the network. I did a windows restore to an earlier time and the problem seemed to be resolved. I then got the same error again, but when I tried to do a restore windows refused saying that the os was damaged. I have done a check on the os using suggestions from the ms site and there appear no serious problems (Vista sp1 dell laptop) Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks Dave

If your hard drive were failing you might be losing files at random as they become corrupt.  That might account for the symptoms you describe.

Following on from what ReedRichards posted, run the Diagnostics on your Dell Laptop. (Press F12 on startup to get into the right menu).
