Re: windows doesn`t "see" my Caddy HDD

Well, Have been through 4 Full Formats and one quick format ... all ended up with "windows was unable to complete the format"... and the files are still on the hdd...
A couple of times I tried to delete the volume, and it crashed my windows laptop.... ( Blue Screen with loads of writing on it !).. re booted and runs ok still... but am not much, if any, further forward...

Re: windows doesn`t "see" my Caddy HDD

If that's the case, try using EaseUS partition manager, never had an issue with that in wiping and reformatting drives... Smiley

Works well when windows (as usual) fails... Smiley

Totally ignoring post number 18....  and  treating it with the contempt it deserves... I shall move on....

Re: windows doesn`t "see" my Caddy HDD

Further investigation reveals....
I tried to "erase" the contents of the Linux hdd,.. through "Eraser 5.6" via the Windows hdd (as it now showss the drive ( F: ) and the contents on the "computer" .. however.. the erasing reports "failed" against all the files and also...........

"The media is write protected"...
don`t know how that works ( or not ) as I never made the hdd write protected..... ( wouldn`t know how to....  ! )
EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT
Just put a Mint17 hdd in the laptop... and the "offending" linux hdd in the caddy... ( shows on the "computer" )  however cannot "open" it to reveal the contents... as Mint 17 says it is unable to mount the drive.... right clicking on it again... then "properties"... then "permissions".///  i t states
"The permissions of Hitachi xxxxxxxx could not be determined"...

Re: windows doesn`t "see" my Caddy HDD

Try using Linux with gparted.
Is the disk formatted in the GPT or MBR style?

Did you see the Edit  above ?  before posting... ?
Don`t know/understand "gparted"... so would need some guidance on that, please....
Don`t know whether it is GPT or MBR either ! ! .....

Re: windows doesn`t "see" my Caddy HDD

Hmm..... On the Mint 17
Menu  >  Preferences > Disks  ( Manage Disks  & Media ) >
Offending drive ( Hitachi ) shows as 250 gb with fee space of 250 gb ...  clicked on the + sign... and it gives the option to erase the contents.. and also to change it to NTFS .. so clicked on Erase ( don`t overwrite) (quicker)... and within seconds, it shows the rive as
Quote

Filesystem
Partition 1
250GB NTFS

Now rebooted with my windows hdd in the laptop.... the offending Hitachi hdd now shows "this folder is empty".. with 232GB space...
control panel > Admisinstrative tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management shows
(F:)
232.89 GB NTFS
Healthy (Primary Partition).

So ,... hopefully,.. all is now done ! ! ! ...

Weird, I've been using EaseUS for a few years and it's always been free to use, I shall check that link, see what's what...
Did you download the Free version or one of the paid versions? If the latter I think they do indeed put those into trial mode so you can't actually use them, which is kind of annoying to say the least... Roll_eyes
Bit barn door I know, but it's got me wondering now... Huh

I would have said "Menu > settings > disks" for Mint/xfce or "Menu > System > YAST > Partitioner" for openSUSE/KDE, as that's what I use Cheesy
