Re: win8.1 update

It's the same price at the Microsoft Store.  That's what you get charged if you want to update a computer running XP, or Vista or 7 to Windows 8.1.

Re: win8.1 update

I got my copy of 8 for £24,99 from MS and a free upgrade. SO it is expensive really.

Something similar here, and I thought THAT was expensive (but needed it for business).
Why anyone would pay £99 to upgrade an old PC to Windows 8 I struggle to comprehend.  Crazy

Re: win8.1 update

I seem to recall it was not just an upgrade you could fresh install it also.
it was for me.. I was back on Win 7 after a week. Last time I tried to use win8 it said my key was invalid so in the end of no value/use at all ;(
:edit: It was £14,99 actually I just found the receipt with the Key on it Smiley

£24.99 for the Pro version in my case, pre-launch "special" in late 2012.  Wink

I have had several clients who had machines running XP who yielded to the campaign mounted by Microsoft to frighten them into upgrading.  They weren't crazy, just ill-informed.  The result generally hasn't been too bad with the fresh copy of Windows 8 typically out-performing the old copy of Windows XP.  I've only done these upgrades on computers bought at the very end of the XP era.

The one I have "upgraded" is an mid-era Vista system and it works fine, as did several older XP systems that I tested it on, though they have all now been scrapped.
Performance wise it's not at all bad, but at £99 it is bad value in my (hopeful well-informed) eyes. Even worse if on top of that you paid someone to do the "upgrade" which is of course a clean install from XP. £25 that I paid was OK as I did all the work myself, used a Vista system that was being scrapped and the XP system it replaced was literally on its last legs.

Yes - except that they paid me to do the upgrade!
I free-up or create a second partition, install 8.1 to that, discuss the pros and cons of a Microsoft Account, check Device Manager for unidentified hardware, install the printer (which usually requires drivers from the manufacturer's web site), add the obvious utilities, copy the user files from the XP partition and usually return a few weeks later to erase the old XP partition when the client is confident everything has been transferred.
