what happens to deleted emails in Thunderbird?

Not microsoft... but ... in IE.... deleted messages are first sent to a "Holding Folder"... called " Deleted"... where you can retrieve something you may have deleted in error...
what happens to them in Thunderbird?  is there a secret location, that needs to be brought up,  or are they dispatched to the outer edges of space immediately you delete them?

Mine are placed  in the 'Deleted - Local folder' and emptied by using File > Empty_deleted

Ha!... thanks for the hint.... I do not have a Deleted folder.... but I do have two Trash folders... one is empty.... the other contains all my deleted messages... so problem solved...  Thanks...

I think Thunderbird gives you a separate Trash folder for each account you create, so if you have two accounts for two different mailboxes each will have its own Trash folder. Depends which account you delete the mails from as to which Trash folder they go into IIRC.

If you are using IMAP Thunderbird allows you to chose what happens to deleted messages (see attached) - including which folder to move them to.

And I think from experience that PN empty the IMAP trash folder after one month  (you can have a Thunderbird trash folder on your local POP3 as well)

But you could create another folder, tell Thunderbird to move the deleted emails in to there and I don't think Plusnet would then delete them!

very true, I even exported them as eml file on my HD and Thundebird will open them with no trouble

Emptying the "Trash" folder in Thunderbird does not actually delete the emails. If you want to consign them to oblivion you need to compact the folders. ("File", "Compact Folders".)

On the other hand, if when deleting emails you use Shift+Delete it immediately sends them in to oblivion from both Thunderbird and the server.

But, again, they are not actually deleted - just taken out of the index. The same applies to virtually all email programmes.
