1. What physical size are you thinking about
2. Do you just want to play Audio
3 .Do you want to play Video Music files?
4. Does it have to be "dedicated" to being just a "player" or do you want something like a mobile phone with internet access? ( small tablet ? )
This is what I have... and it does all the above !..

From a USB stick, or from a TF card.

You might be able to use your phone.
Quite a few recent droids now support OTG (USB On-The-Go) which means you just need an adaptor cable (has to be one that supports OTG but apparently you can get them for like £1) with a micro-USB end to plug in your phone and a USB end to plug your stick in.
See this article for more info - it talks about the HTC One but the info applies to any phone with OTG support (e.g. Nexus 5, Samsung S4 etc).

Just make sure that the "micro" end is the same size as your phone !
