unknown file type

I have been transferring photos from a friends camera, from their memory card, to a CD for them.  Whilst most of the files transferred OK, I found a folder with a load of files labeled with the file extension .jpg_160x120.  Cant seem to find any program that will open them, and a google search dosnt really turn up much.  Has anyone heard of these files. I have evn tried transferring them to my mobile, but all I get is unsupported file type.

Re: unknown file type

if you use http://www.freecommander.com/ you can do the whole folder in one hit, easy to use and far better than Explorer (and free)

Re: unknown file type

Yes, just get a dialogue that the file is unsupported or damaged.  Did another google search , and I suspect these files are connected to the symbian OS in some way, probably some proprietory file type. Will try and get the phone back, and see if they open up on that.

Re: unknown file type

pierre, are you saying this program will open these files, or allow me to rename them.

Re: unknown file type

Thanks for that Jim Sad
These files can directly from a relatively old mobile, that as far as I know, never went near the internet.  I will scan them however.......

Re: unknown file type

Could you attach one for us to look at?
When you reply click on the "Additional Options and Attachments..." then "Browse..."

Scanned for what?
These are probably thumbnail versions of the images in the phone but rather than having the size in the filename part it has been added to the extension (.jpg) part.
First if these are on a CD they need to be copied to a hard disk before you can rename them. Then change a single file from say fred.jpg_160x120 to fred_160x120.jpg and see if you can view the image (try double clicking it).
You don't need any special software, just rename the file to an extension that windows recognises (.jpg).

Re: unknown file type

renaming didnt work at all, just get an error message.  I think the only thing to try is getting the old phone, and seeing if they open on that.

Re: unknown file type

What was the error message - give the full error?
What happens if you run MS paint and try and open the renamed file?

Re: unknown file type

As Pierre said I found this file which opens fine in Picture Viewer and FastStone Image Viewer http://bp0.blogger.com/_cLTS0kZ8aig/SAjaXEpeRoI/AAAAAAAAAAM/dqq9AOPQIfQ/s1600-h/16042008351.jpg_160x...
