unique wireless problem

I am having an unusual problem. I have a netgear dg834g v4 router and have 1 wired pc running xp, 2 wireless laptops running vista + 1 wireless pc running linux. Everything has been working great, until my youngest daughter discovered whyville.net. We have discovered that everytime she tries to load her character, java coffeecup loads in task tray THEN all wireless devices lose internet connection. After a few mins, when IE stops trying to load all our wireless computer regain a connection. At this point a message comes on whyville.net page  telling her connection was lost  and she needs to refresh the page, but of course when she does that it starts the whole process of all wireless computers loseing connections again. We can load and play whyville on our other laptop without this problem happening, so it clearly isn't anything to do with whyville.net or our router not liking that website. My dauters laptop uses java with no problems on other java games, so i'm thinking it is not a java problem. I am wondering if there is some kind of conflict between her laptop and the router that is causing the router to shut off wireless signal until her laptop timesout from whatever it is requesting.
Any help in solving this mistery will be welcome

Re: unique wireless problem

It's not a conflict as all data has to via a wireless card (or a wired card) before it reaches the router.
Your (excellent) router is innocent. Smiley
Have you tried using Firefox to play the game - IE is integrated with the Microsoft OS rather tightly.
Works fine in Firefox - on Linux Smiley (Wirelessly)

Re: unique wireless problem

try firefox and make sure the java is the latest version on you daughters laptop and see if these solve the issue.
what does the java console log say?
seems very strange that it kills the wireless on the router for all pc's Crazy
just loaded the website in IE8 on vista premium running on the netgear usb wireless adapter to a dg834 v4 and runs fine.
java version as below.

Re: unique wireless problem

I will try firefox today, and yes it is very strange it kills all wireless connections but it definatly does. They all get a red cross at the same time and the router can not be found for a few mins every time we try. We already have the latest java and we have uninstalled all java and reinstalled in case it got corrupt at some point. This behavour only happends on my daughters laptop, we are all using IE7 and it does't happen to anyone else. My husbands laptop is also vista, i don't know if it makes a difference that his is premium and hers only home basic? I will let you know if firefox helps

Re: unique wireless problem

you didnt say which machine your Daughter was using, but just seen in a Mag, if one has a 802.11b, the router will slow down to that and the others with 80211g will suffer

Re: unique wireless problem

My daughters laptop is vista home basic and has a wireless realtech g card in it. I tried firefox but that cut all wireless computers off again. The problem isn't a slow connection, it's the fact that trying to play whyville cuts out all wireless connections to all our wireless computers until java timesout.

Re: unique wireless problem

I think you would need to run a packet capture utility - ie Wireshark
This allows you to capture all packets transmitted for later analysis - but is it worth it?

Re: unique wireless problem

Trust my daughter to find such an isolated problem! Well she's definatley unique Grin  She has the power to turf everyone off ::). But seriously all our wireless connections get a red cross, followed by a message "view wireless connections". Our router show up in the list but when we try to connect to it we are given the message "unable to connect, see the administrator". However my one and only wired connection is not affected.

Re: unique wireless problem

i would  install wireshark on your daughters laptop and capture the traffic just before and after starting whyville.
you can google to find out what the packets are and are doing or you can upload your wireshark capture file or take a screen shot of wireshark and we can have a see whats going on. it may not help solve the problem but wiresharks solved alot things for me in the past.
to download http://www.wireshark.org/ and plusnet help pages on using wireshark http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/troubleshooting/wireshark.shtml

Re: unique wireless problem

I'd be curious to know what happens on your router when your wifi goes down. Can you log into the admin pages using a computer connected via an RJ45 cable and watch the status screens whilst your daughter loads the site?
Also, am I right in thinking that it is only when she loads this site on one of your computers?
Might be unconnected, but I disabled uPnP on my router last year after some weirdness occuring whereby my Windows XP would think the router wasn't connected to the net and try to connect it, but in reality it was the other way round and it was forcing a disconnect! This usually happened when my OH at the time would be online with her Mac, and then I turned my Win XP laptop on. As I say, potentially very much a different issue, but maybe worth exploring?

Re: unique wireless problem

The only time wifi goes down is when the whole modem-router goes down! (usually during a power cut) Smiley
If you have a router which has power you can do admin via wifi or ethernet connection - a telephone connection is optional for this.
Why not block that whyville site - either on the PC or in the router?
