unable to connect to internet from networked pc

Help required.....i have 2 pc's networked together via a mini hub, the main computer has the broadband modem attached.
All was working fine,...... but now the 2 pc's are networking together OK & the main pc can connect to the internet but the networked pc can not.
Dont know whether i have changed the settings now, dont know what they should be, have system restored the networked pc, but still cant connect to internet.
Any suggestions would be welcomed..............Jacko

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

On the PC that has the modem attached, open Control panel -> network connections, right click the modem connection and go to properties. Click on the advanced tab, and then select 'allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection'. This should allow them to connect.
Hope that helps,

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

Can you tell us which operating systems are running on each PC? Can each PC see files on the other one? This will at least confirm that the basic network setup is OK.
What firewalls do you have? These often need setting up to allow internet traffic over a network.

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

when i check the box "connect thru this computers internet connection" it takes the network down, when i uncheck the box the network works again,. When the box is checked the other computer still can not connect.
The basic network is up, you can access files from each computer both ways.
Windows XP is on main computer, the other one is XP also.
Dont think i have any firewalls setup.

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

On the pc with the modem open a cmd windows (start/run/cmd) type ipconfig /all
note the ip
do the same on the second pc but look for the default gateway this should be set to the ip from the first pc and the ip should be a similar number to the other pc only the last number should be different.
If this isnt the case change the second IP and default gateway.

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

Is this correct below?
IP routing enabled - NO (on both)
Wins Proxy Enabled - NO ( on both)
I could copy & paste all info from this cmd for both computers would this help?

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

to ping open cmd prompt like you do for ipconfig and then type
ping 194.119.131.66
ping www.plus.net
tracert 194.119.131.66
post the results
In the mean time replace the dns servers set with
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
What was the ipconfig /all from pc one?

Not applicable

The IP addresses are interesting.
When XP can't contact a DHCP server to collect the TCP/IP config, it (by default) automatically assigns a private IP address.
These default Private IP addresses always start 169.254.xxx.xxx, and have a netmask of 255.255.0.0
It appears that this is what is happening in your case, based upon the ipconfig info you have posted.
It could also be the case that your network is configured to use addresses in this range, and perhaps it is after all set up correctly.
The only way to establish the correct settings is for you to also paste up the ipconfig data from your first PC (The one connected to the net)

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

Its not clear were you are getting the dhcp from. so lets do it manually.
Normally there is 2 tv screens in the task bar click on them and choose settings
change automatic to manual
On the pc which connects to the internet set the following
ip 10.0.0.2 subnet 255.255.255.0  dns 85.255.116.87 and  85.255.112.174
On the other pc
ip 10.0.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0  default gateway 10.0.0.2 dns 85.255.116.87 and  85.255.112.174
that should work

Re: unable to connect to internet from networked pc

I thought that the 169.254.*.* is a reserved IANA address for these complicated arrangements where a PC acts as a software switch?
Wouldn't it be easier and infinitely better to scrap the modem and get an ADSL router. You would then have a hardware firewall and you could switch either PC on to access the internet. Probably get a better internet connection too.
