two versions of MSIE

Evenin' all  Smiley
Need to run two versions of MSIE on one machine - 7 and 9.
There's an option to keep the old one when you install, right?
Never done this before so... Just checking in case I screw it up...
Have an old Vista PC with original MSIE7, used for checking sites in des/dev.
Want to add MSIE9 on this machine, for same reason, but not to lose 7...
Am I ok to just go ahead?

Re: two versions of MSIE

No there isn't, you can only have 1 version of Internet Explorer installed at a time. And you don't want to be installing, uninstalling, rebooting constantly either.
Microsoft produce some virtual PC images for people who need to test with old IE versions.

Yeiks... Shocked
right, thanks for that ejs.
(Did you used to be able to run two? - I have a memory of being asked if I wanted to overwrite... ages ago though.)
Anyways, best just keep that Vista/MISE7 machine as is, I reckon.  Don't want to download 4x700Mb of something I already have!!!
Glad I asked, thanks  Smiley

Is http://browsershots.org/ of any use to you?
There's a number of similar sites.

Re: two versions of MSIE

Why not use IE9's built-in Developer Tools?
You can choose both the browser and document mode from IE7-IE9 and switch between standards/quirk modes.

Re: two versions of MSIE

Hmm, not having MSIE9 I wasn't aware of it!
All my work is done on Mac - don't actually have an up-to-date PC!
I guess that was partly why I was asking, I figured I should get MSIE9 --  thus the OP.
So... if I install MSIE9 on the Vista machine, I can use these dev tools to see what MSIE7 would look like?
Sounds like an option.

.... I should get out more...  Grin

Re: two versions of MSIE

This should help make your decision a little easier.
The tools will allow you to test IE7 through IE9 in Standards / Quirk / Compatability modes all from one installation.

Re: two versions of MSIE

Thanks Graham, this does look interesting. The comments are also interesting?
Thinks... being as though we're not sure if the IE7 rendering via IE9 is 'working accurate', I might just keep the real IE7 on the Vista machine for checking.
IE7 is the only old browser I really have any real problem with - I like to keep the sites strict but simple - and the % of visitors still using 7 are in single figures. (And most of them are non-legit hits from RU anyway - single strikes on the registration php files, and all that!  Angry )
Made a note of all links and suggestions here. Probably be using them all in combo! Thanks to everyone, really helpful. I'm a lot clearer about this stuff than I was  Smiley
nice forum going on here...
