I've recently changed my Netgear DG834G for a Thomson Speedtouch ST716WL (so that I can start making VOIP 'phone calls).
One thing I've noticed is that if I run a tracert, the first hop to the router is slow e.g.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>tracert plus.net
Tracing route to plus.net [212.159.9.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 41 ms 99 ms 99 ms speedtouch.lan [***.***.*.***]
2 22 ms 24 ms 29 ms lo0-plusnet.ptn-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.53]
3 21 ms 20 ms 21 ms ge0-0-0-204.ptn-gw02.plus.net [84.92.3.93]
4 22 ms 21 ms 21 ms te2-2.pte-gw2.plus.net [212.159.1.106]
5 27 ms 27 ms 27 ms 92.core.plus.net [212.159.1.92]
6 35 ms 27 ms 28 ms fhw-lb04.plus.net [212.159.1.146]
7 27 ms 27 ms 26 ms portal.plus.net [212.159.9.2]
Trace complete.
If I ping the router I get the expected response times e.g.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ping speedtouch.lan
Pinging speedtouch.lan [***.***.*.***] with 32 bytes of data:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

I think that the Netgear router always reported <1ms when running a tracert.
It doesn't seem to be causing any problem but I'm curious as to why this should be.
Thanks - Bob
