time servers for both XP and Mac OS8.5

accessing internet time, I have two questions:
1. I have an old Mac running OS8.5 which should connect to an ntp server on port 123 - it seems to send out something but nothing is returned. Is there a way I can see what the computer is sending out to be sure it is the correct code?
I have another old Mac running OS9.1 (same router) and that seems to work just fine.
2. XP - I seem to recall there is something unusual about how the standard internet time is decoded in the XP clock control panel. Is there a way I can connect to a server that works? At present I use a separate non-MS application to access the ntp servers and update my time clock.
I have tried (amongst many)
ntp.plus.net
time.euro.apple.com

Re: time servers for both XP and Mac OS8.5

I run my own local NTP server on my home network, which in turn gets it's time reference from http://www.pool.ntp.org/en/
The http://How do I use pool.ntp.org  has helpful info on configuring your computer's NTP.
For the most accurate time settings you should try and use the nearest servers to you, which are documented here - http://www.pool.ntp.org/zone/uk
