In chrome check addons section just incase its some kinda addon spyware, still sounds like spyware too me. If it was happening to me id uninstall chrome and make sure i remove any folders related too it and then reboot and re download chrome from googles offical site. I personally would not try anything else until i found the root of the problem.
Theres another program you can try ive not needed to use this in a while, it may help and its free Have a look at this http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/ it will scan your files you will need to look for the suspicious links you see highlight it and click on info see what comes up then try and fix it see what happens

Its deffo spyware or virus of some kind,  also give these a try http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ you may also want to run your pc in safe mode and try running malwarebytes and your avg, i got rid of avg 12 months ago because it was getting full of adverts and theres a few in these forums done the same if your happy thats cool but you may like to try avast its what i use https://www.avast.com/en-gb/index its free all you need to do is register your e-mail.
I wouldnt give up and trying to find the root of this issue because it could get worse

Thank you St3 for your very comprehensive step by step instructions.  I've followed them to the letter.  As soon as I installed Avast, it found a serious threat, with security in the title, so I am hoping that's the one we're looking for.  All we can do now, is wait and see if the problem returns or not.;

Thank you Robski1.  Tried that, but it didn't show anything.  Maybe, just maybe, it's gone!

Making notes is not easy when Avast is dealing with a threat. However when "removed" threats are normally moved out of harms way to a Virus Chest. You can see what's in there by opening the user interface and clicking the "Virus Chest" icon.
Each threat removed will be listed on a separate line with the headings giving various details. Scrolling far right shows the virus name which might be of interest to readers.

I'm afraid the virus chest shows no viruses dealt with since Avast was started.

It came back again today.  I found this, also on the plus net forum  http://community.plus.net/forum126410.0.html//index.php/topic, ; so I am trying that.  Will let you know if it works.

Have u installed any new programs before you started to notice this ?

No new progs.  However, I did try the solution mentioned in my previous post, but no success.  I looked up infonet  and it appears to be a partner with BT, so I'm not so concerned now.  But I would still like to get rid of it.  I'm going to try to find out how to change the infornet address assigned to my laptop and get a static address from BT.  I might even try the tel. no. offered!
