single and multimode optical fibre

Hi
As I've said I'm starting Cisco next year and trying to brush up on little gaps in my knoweldge.
I've read that the difference between single and multimode fibre is that single can carry one light beam while multi can carry several, is this correct or does this designation mean something entrirely different.
Up to now I've just considered optical fibre as just plain optical fibre.

good luck with your studies techguy and when you're done, bring it on - to paraphrase: not susceptible to emp; next to impossible to hack into.
let's get fibre laid and linked!
