password recovery

Added a new internal hard drive but on right clicking in the computer management console I only get 3 options, new partition, properties & help.
I Suspect this is because I am not logged on as Administrator.
By selecting a program using Run as, whilst holding the shift key down I can get into the box that gives access to the Admin account and my name shows as the account name but it is the password I am struggling with, I don't even remember setting a password !
I would appreciate your help on this.

Re: password recovery

Can't help with the password, but have you created a new partition on your drive?

Re: password recovery

Adiewoo,
Thanks for your response.
What I wanted to do was format the drive in NTFS... Do I need to create a new partition first ?
I've not done this before so apologies if the question sounds daft.

Re: password recovery

You can convert an existing partiton to ntfs without loosing any data as for password have you tried just pressing return?
To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
  1.
Open Command Prompt. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
  2.
In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, typing convert 😧 /fs:ntfs would format drive 😧 with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

Re: password recovery

Adiewoo,
spot on, created the partition and then formatted it no problem.
Samuria,
Yes I tried pressing return and got the message "password cannot be left blank".
The password issue is not a problem now as the drive formatted and I have been able to install and use programs on my main drive without requests for an Admin password.
My only worry is the time might come when I am prevented from using or accessing some file or program that requires this admin password. I did find one website that advised a program could be run as an administrator by doing the following,
Run CMD
Type net_user_administrator_/Active:Yes
Press Enter
BW screen advises if you have been successful or not.
As I am not into programming I thought it wise not to try this but if anyone has any experience of accessing/changing admin passwords that would be helpful for the future.

Re: password recovery

You can do this with the AT Command. The AT command runs all it's passwords with NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM. this is higher than admin
Get to a command prompt.
type AT /interactive cmd.exe
Example:
C:> at 1:43pm /interactive cmd.exe
Wait for time to come and a command prompt will come up. Everything from that point on has elevated privileges. Every program you run has the elevated privileges. Handy if you need to change permissions to registry keys.

then run nusrmgr.cpl at the cmd prompt and change the password or see my list of cmd prompts for other commands to run

Re: password recovery

If the OP can do that without an admin password that is seriously scary  Huh

Re: password recovery

Or you can use Linux based boot disks containing a NTFS driver with which you can simply write an appropriate registry key.
See Google for details.
