non standardization of units in computing

people think Mb means MB they are not the same

actually mb  mB Mb & MB are all different

even mb & mb can be different size depending on what is measured. { yea no typo both are lower case}

some measurements even use the WRONG symbols .  ie  using GB when it should be BB { think HDD or USB pen drive etc} is the reason your pc sees your HDD 7% smaller than you think you have

there are 8 bits to a byte or 10 depending on what you measure

same goes for kilo is it 1000 or 1024, again it depends on what you are measuring

and mega   1000 x 1000 or 1024 x1024

same goes for giga & terra

this link explains it a lot better than me    http://www.lyberty.com/encyc/articles/kb_kilobytes.html

why is there no standard size format

Re: non standardization of units in computing

You missed out the MiB/GiB sequence notation which uses 2^10n Huh

See wikipedia .

Though disk manufacturers use a hybrid 10^3n x 2^10 system Crazy2

Re: non standardization of units in computing

People (and countries, namely the United States in the English speaking world) that use non-standard formats for time drive me up the wall. But they seemed to implement a lot of things just because they didn't want to do things like the country they'd just broken away from.

Remember 9/11. Is it the 9th of November, or 11th of September. In common sense land (Britain) it would be the 9th of November. Smallest division of date, by the second. In that order. Not second smallest division of date, by the first smallest division of date.

Then a great and brilliant individual went and created ISO 8601 standard. I love that person.

Re: non standardization of units in computing

Ah! But why do we use decreasing unit sizes for times but increasing units for dates?

Hour>minute>second but day<month<year

Re: non standardization of units in computing

But not in the USA

Month>day<year

Or the ISO 8601 standard

Year>month>day>Hour>Minute>seconds

I use year>month>date eg 17-07-18 for documents, photos etc in PC folders - keeps everything in date order.

Re: non standardization of units in computing

was just making a point. and inform peeps.

if you look you will see that 99% of bad reviews internet providers get are about low speeds. people think they are getting download speed in megabytes . if they knew it was megabit they would see that their speeds were ok.

its totally misleading to use bits. nothing except dowload speed is measured in bits. EVERYTHING else is measured in bytes.

problem is that if plusnet or any provider started to use bytes the speeds would look really slow compared to the other suppliers.

would you even consider 2MB/s max speed?   even tho its about 2 x faster than 10 Mb/s.

most people just look at the number not the unit used

rocket science is prob less confusing   lol

I'm sure we're all very grateful for the elucidation.

Shouldn't you have specified the Baud rate?
