networking with 2 different OS

I'm thinking of networking 2 computers. One has XP and the other is Win7
just to complicate matters I may even add a laptop to the equation which runs on Vista
Before I get started can anyone envisage any problems which may occur
Also if there is any advice out there which may prove helpful
such as procedure
Should I start the setup on one system in preference to another?
Thanks

Re: networking with 2 different OS

I started with the network on XP then added a Vista computer (that was a pain) then added a Windows 7 computer and it found the network automatically.
Hence it might be better to setup the network on XP first and then allow Windows 7 to see it.
When you try the Vista laptop I suggest that praying may be a god idea

Re: networking with 2 different OS

Same for me with  XPSP3 (x2) and Vista (x1).
Vista was and continues to be problematic. Eventually got it set up so that Vista can access files across the network and share printer etc. Despite many attempts I have never got the Vista machine to see shared iTunes library.
No experience of Win7 or any non microsoft os.

No problem with 1 x XP SP3 box + 1 x W7 32-bit + 1 x W7 64-bit (and my son's blackberry and wife's vivaz!)  Shocked
