having a clear out,and come across netgear usb wg111v2 date on box 2005,i installed drivers of the web,but when i plug it in( netgear device not detected)is it because i am running vista and this device is only for xp hence date on box 2005?

Did you install the vista drivers from here ?

now that i am wireless,laptop and main pc,should i connect the pc cable to the router, say once a week,in case of updates etc,etc?thanks.

Windows requires updates every few days.
Routers (which are connected to the internet, anyway) are unlikely to ever require an update!
