need info on processors etc for new laptop

My big laptop just died this morning. no power with battery or power supply and it well out of warranty.
I have been looking at the sites but could do with an update on processors. Obviously i5 is better than i3 but where do they lie in comparison to dual core intels and what about the hierarchy for amd chips what compares to what?
it used to be easy but now there are so many of the things i'm a bit out of date.
cheers,
podman

Performance/Price ratio has always been better with AMD.

i3 is a dual core Intel processor but it's their latest one so ought to be superior to their other processor brands.
AMD rather lost the plot lately so I'm not sure what Foxy says is true at present.

One question (or two) that nobody has asked:
What model / spec was the old laptop?
What do you mainly use it for?

Here's another:
Why does it have to be a laptop?
They are expensive, have small screens and CPU power requirements are more important than speed or price.

Jeremy, I don't know where you have been for the last few years but desktops are quite hard to find these days and this tends to make them more expensive than laptops.  The trend towards low power processors means you don't sacrifice processor power when buying a laptop as you used to.
