missing file type suffix`s

Windows Vista Home Premium.....
whenever I use "my computer" or "windows explorer"..... I cannot see the file suffix on the list of files in any folders.... particularly music files....
I have the headlines "Name" > "Type"> "Size" at the column heads, but no info other than the name of the file is shown....is there some "secret" to restore this facility, apart from using the right click and properties on each particular file.?? ?Huh

Re: missing file type suffix`s

If you visit Control Panel / Folder Options and click the View tab.
Look to see if the Hide extensions for Known File Types box is ticked.
If it is then untick it.

Re: missing file type suffix`s

Open Explorer
Click on Tools then Folder Options and then View
Untick Hide Extensions for known file types
Edit - slightly different to Strat's method

Re: missing file type suffix`s

Just a comment.  The option to "hide extensions for known file types" is the Windows default for XP, Vista & 7 (I can't remember if it applied to earlier versions of Windows).  I have never been able to see what good this does.

Re: missing file type suffix`s

I hate this option. When you are trying to support people over the phone it causes no end of confusion when they apparently have two files with the same name.

I suspect it was intended to stop unseasoned users from renaming files and subsequently 'breaking' them by removing the file extension.

Re: missing file type suffix`s

Possibly - but I've seen a files with double extension as a result of someone knowing that text files should have a .txt extension and so they renamed it!

Re: missing file type suffix`s

It's because M$ thought it would be a good idea to have a file "extension" in the days of DOS.
They still think this is a massively clever idea, but don't realise that the dot and the extension are just part of the filename...

Re: missing file type suffix`s

If Microsoft still thought file extensions are "a massively clever idea" they would not be so ashamed as to conceal them (by default).

Re: missing file type suffix`s

and there files are named  .doc, .xls, .pdf, etc etc etc.  so how do you know what it is when M$S decides to hide the extension

Re: missing file type suffix`s

I can't remember how I did it, spent about 15 minutes searching hither and thither and eventually found out how to defeat M$'s "we think we know better than thou - but we don't". Grin

Re: missing file type suffix`s

Well - any neophyte would spot that in a matter of seconds!
(Should you be displaying hidden files and directories?).
[edit] - and your OS files as well?
