left shift key not working

I have a dell dimension with media centre and a multimedia keyboard and in the last week or so the left shift key is not working.
I have tried a different keyboard and it it the same.
The left one works fine but I use the left one all the time.
is it  a setting that i have changed in error?
it is really annoying when typing emails as i keep getting ' instead of @

Re: left shift key not working

The other keyboard you tried - do you know for sure that one is OK? New ones are dirt cheap, so it is worth trying one.

Re: left shift key not working

Why do you not get @ are you using the wrong keyboard ie US not UK?  Try the keyboard in safe mode ie press F8 on startup and select safemode doe it work ok then?

Re: left shift key not working

A UK keyboard has ' as the standard (non-shifted character) and @ when you hold the shift key down. The OP's problem is the shift key does not work so he always gets '

Keep us posted if you find a solution. Smiley
Edit: Have you tried removing and re detecting the keyboard in Device Manager.

Re: left shift key not working

I did a system restore to a month ago and also deleted keyboard out from device manager. Unplugged keyboard and put back in to another USB port, it connected fine and all is well again.@
THANKS

Re: left shift key not working

I did manage to recreate this briefly by turning on and changing some 'sticky key' options. maybe it was turned on in error (pressing shift 5 times).

Re: left shift key not working

Same thing has happened again but after unpluggeing keyboard and put back in to another USB port, it connected fine and no change ' instead on a @
Sticky keys are off so completely confused, maybe a system rebuild, but a bit drastic
Any help appreciated

Re: left shift key not working

Isn`t this something to do with the keyboard settings?  either English (english) or English (usa) or possibly English (european)  (if there is a european version)..... Huh
