ip address look ups location results.

i normaly use http://whatismyipaddress.com/ for doing look ups of ip addresses but it wouldnt work for a microsoft ip address i was looking up but as normal it checked my ip address on loading as normal told me i lived on the moors of harogate way of the mark.
but when i checked this site http://www.ip-adress.com/ to do the microsoft ip lookup i noticed that it had my loaction nearly spot on by 10 miles in fact i had lived in the town it gave for 20 years of my live.
how come this site nearly got it right?

Both addresses show me as London and I'm quite close to you.

For me, http://whatismyipaddress.com/ doesn't give a map, and just says London. http://www.ip-adress.com/ is a bit more specific, and says Wokingham. Presumably these reflect server locations rather than user locations?

These are usually based on either who the IP is registered to which is usually drawn from http://www.ripe.net or some use the info and add in a calculation for ping response etc to roughly guess where you might be I think.
For example, the ones you have linked to think I'm in Winchester which is not far from where my ISP is based but if I use http://www.ip2location.com it indicates London which is where their equipment is (Telehouse in Docklands like some of Plusnet's and other ISPs)
Maybe PN have an edge router at a DC in Dorset perhaps oldjim?

Both show me slap bang in the middle of the Yorkshire dales.
Would be nice to be there but a couple of hundred miles out..

http://whatismyipaddress.com/ ; shows me as in Slough (I think it usually just feels like it!) www.ip-adress.com/ is much closer and just shows North London(ish)

hadnt loked closely at you Pic John, now I know.  Not far from Hulls, IP is Sheffield, the other in Mid Sussex, diagonally across London

I've now moved from London to High Wycombe. Substantial improvement
