in car computing with laptop - a query

The orginal posting on here was going nowhere, so I have re posted it to see if I get a "proper" response.

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

you can buy DC to DC voltage converters
if you say your laptop works on 19v DC
then to connect it to a 12v car supply  you need
a 12V DC to 19V DC voltage  converter
you can see them for sale here http://www.powerstream.com/19v-index.htm

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

I'd never advice a car driver to connect  a laptop inside a car while driving
unless you car is stationary and switched off then its not a good idea

Erm!.... did you read the posting? or just guess an answer?  Roll_eyes Roll_eyes
What a stupid thing to say.... about a car driver connecting  a laptop whilst driving...... that would constitute.... "driving without due care".... in the same way as using a mobile phone....
(as a matter of interest.... did I mention connecting my (any) laptop whilst driving ?)  Undecided

will run directly from the 12v cig socket.....

not using an inverter to make 250v ac, then plug in your laptop power supply to bring it down to 19v !...

(also implying dc to dc converter)

please read what I said.  Roll_eyes

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

you've still not read what i've said
it does not involve a 240volt or any other converter
its just steps up 12v to 19v by electronic design means
but no matter  my  postings are correct

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

Just to make sure your laptop is safe and stable while you type and drive, you'll be needing one of these "Steering Wheel Laptop Holders" http://www.electronicsweekly.com/blogs/engineering-design-problems/2010/06/i-cant-believe-someone-ma..., available from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Mobile-Office-WM-01-Laptop-Steering/dp/B000IZGIA8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top.  I like the customer's photos of this device on the Amazon site !

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

My post was a rhetorical question to Giro as I believe he/she has no idea how these converters step up the voltage. DC voltages cannot be stepped up without converting to AC.

Oh yes they can.

Re: in car computing with laptop - a query

I was just about to add to my last post Charge pumps just in case Giro believe these are not  AC circuits. Any circuits that use diodes to rectify/control the flow of current is an AC circuit. Charge pumps use diodes and capacitors.
As a designer I use tried to avoid DC to DC converters as these can emit high frequencies and is a consideration for EMC.
