hp F2480 printer-New to this

I  have a photo I want to put on my pc so I can make some changes to it but when I try to get it on my pc all it does is scan then print,I dont want to print till I have worked on it,what can I  do,I must be pressing wrong buttons or something  ???.Also I want my printer in another room instead of my kitchen table all the time,but its connected to the pc,can I do this?

Scanning should be easy  - have you tried using the scanner interface on the computer not by pressing buttons on the printer - HP Photosmart Software as specified in the manual page 27 http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01855375.pdf
That printer only has a USB interface so it need to be within reach of the computer
