hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

Just upgraded to 9 from 8.5 and can't turn Off sys tray ballon/popup notifications.  So it can crash full screen apps that can't be alt tabbed from or steals focus.  Very annoying for games.

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

I'm currently using Windows Defender plus AVG Free 8.5 and it looks like 9.0 disables Defender. Is anyone else running this combination and has upgraded?
I have also been looking at Microsoft Security Essentials as a replacement for AVG and Defender. Anyone got any experience of this?

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

Had to go back to 8.5 as I also also had the HDD/CPU issue, CPU spikes every minute or so and HDD constantly being scanned. Version 9 is looking like a lemming at the moment and their email support isn't picking it up, my last AVG sub for a while and now looking for a replacement if they don't fix this.
@bobboulby had the same defender was turned off by it
Still using Vista64, waiting for a month or 2 before I install Win7.

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

I am sticking with 8.5 (for now..... until someone says it is ok to upgrade,)
BUT.... not sure if it will get updates on viruses because of
this....
AVG Free edition 9.0 is now available
To stay protected you will have to upgrade your version
which is on the bottom of the AVG overview panel.....  Undecided Undecided

Yes, seems OK. Used it on a few systems (mine and other peoples).
Slight oddity in my new W7x64 install that one specific inbuilt security check flagged up that I had no AV despite MSE working fine. No warnings from the main monitoring though, so there's a minor bugette in the guts of W7 - surprise, surprise!

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

Thanks for that.
Hopefully AVG will keep the 8.5 signature updates coming for a while so I'll stick with my current set-up and decide what to do later.

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

There is an (unofficial) AVG FORUM that helps sort out problems.....
in particular AVG 9 has a section here
http://forums.avg.com/gb-en/avg-free-forum?sec=theme&act=show&id=161
Scroll down a bit and you will see threads about it "freezing" etc....
hope that helps some of you.... Wink

Yep very helpful forum they close active threads on major issues.  Sad to say it has become bloated, another Norton clone to avoid.

Re:hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

I must admit I found the same thing, I've moved to Avira which seems to be working alright (though I do get the odd popup telling me I haven't updated in more than 7 days, which isn't true - Having said that this has only been happening since I reinstalled from an Acronis image). Avira is a lot less resource intensive and while there are those popups they don't steal focus from fullscreen apps, which is nice.

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

I've been having problems with loading of forum pages not completing (hanging on webstats.plus.net).
Guess what I've just tried disabling and the problem seems to have gone away!
Edit: Drat spoke too soon - it's back again

Re: hangfire on AVG v9 update its buggy

Right I have now cured the hanging community pages - I've uninstalled AVG v9 and boy oh boy is my PC faster!
