In laws xp system has thrown up this error when hes trying to restart the print spooler that has mysteriously stopped. I havnt yet been to see it, but googling this error throws up alot of things and it appears to be a pita to solve. He has 2 printers, a dell all in one, that he only uses as a scanner and a canon pixma ip4300. Things have worked fine for ages and the only thing thats been done is auto update service has been turned off as it was slowing the system to a crawl. Has anyone had this issue and how did you solve it. Thanks in advance.....

The Windows Update problem is a known bug which I have encountered. There is a fix, here I think http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1923551/cpu-usage-100.html , although I doubt that is associated with the current problem
I would think the suggestions here http://www.techsupportall.com/solved-print-spooler-error-1068-the-dependency-service-or-group-failed...; to cure the print spooler error look promising, although I cannot vouch for them.
Quote There is a bug MS are currently trying to fix - which causes Windows Update and Automatic Updates under XP to get stuck searching for updates.
See: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=2315886...
And : http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/microsoft-...
Download IE8 for XP - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explor...
Download latest IE8 Security Update: IE8-WindowsXP-KB2898785-x86-ENU.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id...
Install both and reboot - Updates should now work.
If you don't want to install IE8 you can update your current IE version with the KB2898785 update
IE6: WindowsXP-KB2898785-x86-ENU.exe
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id...
IE7: IE7-WindowsXP-KB2898785-x86-ENU.exe

Well its fixed, but a slightly roundabout way. It appears the print spooler had an extra dependant, LEXBCE server, that on googling is something to do with lexmark printers. Odd as hes never had a lexmark printer.... anyhow followed the instrctions on the site reed linked to, to reset the dependency, and rebooted. Appeared fine except that the items in the task tray never appeared and hovering over the start menu was consistently an hour glass, no matter how long it was left. Also odd items in control panel such as the security centre and system would not open hdd was not being thrashed either. Resorted to rebooted to last known good configuration. This cured this but rsset the dependancys. I set LEXBCE to automatic, as it was disabled, and rebooted, and now all is well again. Very odd. Only thing I can think of is his dell all in one is based on a lexmark design and uses lexmark drivers....
Tried your links to downloading ie8 but they got to the microsoft site, that told me ie8 wasnt available for xp. Downloaded from file hippo, and also downloaded the cumulative from the site you linked to. Seems fine now...

I haven't looked recently but "Dell" printers were always Lexmark printers retooled so the Lexmark cartridges would not fit.
